The Natural Solution to Contact Lens Discomfort

Contact lenses, those handy-dandy little vision aids, make the difference for 28 million people between seeing clearly in all directions, or being confined to inconvenient and distorting eyeglasses or worse. With the many choices and technological advances available these days, contact lenses should continue to benefit millions of people who have less-than-perfect vision.

Here’s the catch: While a few contact lens users are able to wear their lenses for days or weeks at a time with no problem, such individuals are the exception. Many people can tolerate contact lenses only for short periods, and many cannot tolerate them at all. Even for those who tolerate them reasonably well, lenses frequently cause discomfort. This article will suggest a way to soothe much of the eye discomfort caused by contact lenses:

The amazing tear film

The main thing to know about contact lenses is that they float on the surface of the delicate and complex tear film that covers the exposed parts of the eyeball, and they rely on the tear film’s moisture (water content) to maintain their pliability, integrity and adherence. The surface tension of the tear film’s moisture against the lenses prevents them from falling out.

The problem is that the most popular types of lenses deplete the tear film’s moisture content and therefore interfere with healthy tear film functioning. Soft lenses, and gas permeable lenses, have been compared to miniature sponges because of the amount of tear film moisture they soak up. Even rigid lenses deplete some tear film moisture. In addition, all lenses, even gas permeable, reduce the amount of oxygen reaching the corneal surface. Rigid lenses restrict oxygen the most, which is one reason they are smaller.

Tear film function and structure

The tear film that covers the exposed optical surface is amazingly complex, considering that it is only about five microns (millionths of a meter) thick. Tear film components:

Lipid layer. This topmost layer is comprised of a very thin film of fatty oil that lubricates the eyelid and slows moisture evaporation from the lower layers.

Aqueous layer. The middle and thickest layer contains the vast majority of the tear film’s moisture. This is where most moisture loss occurs. The layer also contains electrolytes, proteins and bacteria-fighting antibodies. It provides oxygenated water to allow the cornea to breathe.

Mucin layer. This bottom layer glues the tear film to the optical surface.

Dry irritated eyes

When tear film moisture is depleted, the resulting abnormal changes can make the eyes feel uncomfortable. The most physically irritating results of tear film moisture loss are an over-concentration of electrolyte (salt) and proteins in the aqueous layer. Insufficient oxygen in the aqueous layer’s moisture can also cause discomfort. Discomfort can include itching, burning, irritation, eyestrain, headache, etc.

Soothing dry, irritated eyes

Soothing dry, irritated eyes, whether caused by contact lenses, environmental conditions or bodily dehydration from illness or stress, is a simple and logical tear film cross section procedure: Simply add moisture to the tear film! In the past 110 years of medical eye care research, however, this has proved more easily said than done.

One problem has been getting the moisture past the overlying lipid layer. As it turns out, our eyes already know how to accomplish this trick. The tear film is perfectly capable of extracting all the moisture it needs from the humidity in the air, provided the air is reasonably humid (70% at 70 degrees), and the humidity droplets are pure and unpolluted.

However…the standard solution to the problem of dry, irritated eyes has been not humidity but eyedrops. Since eyedrops rely on chemical formulations and eyedroppers, they pose numerous drawbacks. The typical eyedrop is ten times larger than the volume of the tear film. When applied, the drop may flood and wash away the natural tear film, including the evaporation-retarding lipid layer. Despite their complex chemistry, formulated eyedrops invariably lack one thing: The minute quantity of pure, natural, pH-balanced water that is all the tear film really needs.

Additional drawbacks to eyedrops and wetting agents:

  • You have to remove your contact lenses to apply them.
  • Some people are allergic to the chemicals and preservatives.
  • The eyedropper can cause injury.
  • Applying eyedrops is a slow, tedious procedure.

The solution

In 2002, Bio-Logic Aqua Technologies Biomedical Research introduced Nature’s Tears EyeMist, the first effective, all-natural alternative to formulated eyedrops for dry, irritated eyes. For the first time, millions of contact lens wearers are obtaining instant relief from dry, irritated eyes…without eyedrops.

Nature’s Tears EyeMist solved the problem of getting moisture in extremely minute quantities past the lipid layer into the aqueous layer. This is accomplished very simply, by delivering the moisture as an ultra-pure, ultra-fine mist that emulates the air’s natural humidity. The mist is sprayed towards the face rather than into the eyes, enabling the tear film to extract exactly as much moisture as it needs, no more and no less. In most cases, all that is required to restore the tear film’s moisture content to full volume and comfort, is two to five nanoliters (billionths of a liter). That is far too little to apply with an eyedropper.

As an added benefit, delivering moisture in the form of a mist oxygenates the moisture, thus increasing the aqueous layer’s oxygen content.

A suggestion

The most beneficial component of eyedrops is the paraffin or oil that can serve as a sealer to slow tear film moisture loss. Eyedrops are most effective as a moisture sealer when the tear film’s moisture content is at full capacity. For best results, apply Nature’s Tears EyeMist immediately before applying eyedrops, and use the smallest amount of eyedrops possible. Since Nature’s Tears EyeMist has no dosage limit, it may also be applied between eyedrop applications, or when eyedrops are not convenient.

American Woman Invents New Business of Water

Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) July 11, 2011

The Result of Two Decades of Research into the Health Effects of Water, Pollution, Climate Change and Air.

Sharon Kleyne, an American woman, business entrepreneur, water advocate and Founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research, is announcing a series of breakthrough discoveries by her company that are creating a new branded category in the business of water – “water mixed with air” (which has very different properties and benefits than liquid water). She projects that this new category water business will achieve global distribution, with billion-dollar a year sales.

This new category business is expected to greatly expand the existing global business of water, already growing rapidly, that is currently dominated by water-to-drink.

Two decades ago, Mrs. Kleyne founded Bio-Logic Aqua Research in Grants Pass, Oregon, out of concern for the combined health effects of water, pollution, climate change and air. Mrs. Kleyne challenged herself to develop an effective individual, all-natural, all-water, hand-held portable humidifying device for dry skin and dry eyes, to generate global mass market sales.

That challenge has now been met – due to breakthrough discoveries by Bio-Logic Aqua Research involving the utilization of humidity from the air by the skin and eyes, the ideal water for maximum beneficial surface absorption, and the technology of mist application. Bio-Logic Aqua Research is the only company, worldwide, whose exclusive business is the bottling and marketing of an all-natural trade secret water as an all-natural humidity supplement, for external application to the human body.

“The number one global environmental threat to health,” Mrs. Kleyne explains, “is that the air we breathe is becoming too dry. Our ‘breath of life’ is endangered. Everyone knows the air is polluted and dirty but few people realize that as a result, the air is also losing its life-giving clean water (humidity).”

Dry air, Mrs. Kleyne discovered, causes numerous dehydration diseases such as dry skin, dry eyes, allergies and melanoma. Environmentally caused dry eye is now the #1 reason for eye doctor visits in the United States. In countries with extreme air pollution and/or water shortages, dry eye has become a major health crisis. Ninety-percent of the world’s blind live in places such as China, India and areas of Africa, and the blindness rate is expected to double by 2030.

“My company’s personal hand-held water misting devices,” Mrs. Kleyne states, “empower every individual to provide their own instant humidity supplement for dry skin and dry eyes, regardless of how dirty or dry the air.”

After assembling a global Business and Medical Advisory Team to participate in this new discovery, Mrs. Kleyne conducted research, consulted with scientists, doctors, business leaders and Wall Street, and developed a business plan that remains the road map to the company’s future.

The ideal water for application as an airborne mist to dehydrated skin and eyes, it was discovered, is the company’s trademarked, trade secret water, “Bio-Logic Aqua® all-natural tissue culture grade water.” Double-blind testing shows that the water is ideal for maximum beneficial absorption into dry skin and dry eyes, with no burning or blurring.

Bio-Logic Aqua Research invested millions of dollars into researching the properties, application and benefits of Bio-Logic Aqua water. The company then invested in market research and testing of its products in 70,000 retail outlets (chain and independent drugstores, doctors’ offices, high end department stories, hospitals, the military, law enforcement, etc.), generating millions of dollars in sales. It also obtained the first United States Patent on the application of a pure mist to humidify dry eyes and a dry tear film. The company holds patents or pending patents in several countries.

Bio-Logic Aqua Research markets three hand-held water mist products, for dry eye, dry skin, and first aid and emergencies, with additional products in development.

“Earth will continue to change,” says Mrs. Kleyne, “and for life to survive for eternity, we must learn to adapt to and live with the changes. In the current global environment, it is realistic to predict that my company’s water products will one day be as indispensable as drinking water, clothing, sunscreen and lip balm.”

Preventing the Skin Cancer Melanoma: Education + Water! Water! Water!

May 27, 2011

Why should I worry about melanoma?

Malignant melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancers and is potentially fatal. Melanoma in adults often originates in childhood. Worldwide (including the United States), melanoma is increasing. The good news: Melanoma is preventable, and curable if caught in time.

The immediate cause of melanoma is cell damage from solar radiation. But the ultimate causes are complex and often involve lifestyle choices, made by your parents, beginning when you were born. Melanoma is a dehydration disease related to chronic loss of water in the skin. Skin dehydration begins at birth and parents MUST educate their children on the importance of water, diet, health and sun protection.

A child who is healthy, well hydrated (drinks enough water), knows how to protect their skin, and continues these proactive habits as an adult, is far less likely to develop malignant melanoma.

How can I reduce my melanoma risk?

¨      Education. It is up to YOU to be proactive and learn all you can about hydration, water, nutrition, skin care and wise lifestyle choices, and teach this to your children. Do not wait for your doctor to bring up these issues and do not wait until symptoms develop.

¨      Water. For healthier, melanoma resistant skin, apply Nature’s Mist all-natural skin moisture (water) before sunscreen, lotion or any other skin application. ( More information…) It is also important to drink eight to ten glasses of pure water a day. Juice, coffee, tear and soft drinks don’t count. Mineral water, vitamin water and flavored water do count (carbonated water contains too much sodium).

¨      Diet.  For healthy skin and eyes, daily servings of dark green leafy vegetables are recommended, such as spinach, arugula and kale. Vitamin D supplements are also beneficial to skin.

¨      Skin color. Fair skinned people are far more susceptible to sunburn and UV damage than darker skinned people, and are therefore less likely to develop skin cancers. However, darker skinned people can develop these diseases and should protect their skin.

¨      Bathing. Soaking baths are excellent for skin health and hydration, and release of skin toxins. Baths should be followed by a quick shower to wash off toxins and soap residue (dried soap is very dehydrating).

¨      UV radiation/sunscreen. Solar radiation, especially ultraviolet (UV) radiation, is a cause of melanoma. UV radiation can be blocked by clothing, avoiding direct sunlight and by the application of sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15 but preferably as high as possible. Ideally, you should apply sunscreen any time you go in the sun, summer or winter. Cosmetic products are now available that contain sunscreen. Melanoma may also be caused by exposure to other sources of UV radiation, such as tanning beds.

¨      Sugar. Research is discovering numerous ways in which excessive sugar intake may not be good for you. Sugar is dehydrating, can cause weight gain, interferes with antioxidants that keep your body healthy, and creates cravings for unhealthy foods.

¨      Climate. Where you live is obviously important. Melanoma risk is correlated with more sunshine (regardless of temperature), lower humidity and higher air pollution. That does not mean the risk is zero if you live where there is less sunshine, more humidity and less pollution. Where the risk is higher, preventive measures should be increased. And remember that everyone’s level of susceptibility is different.

¨      Indoor-outdoor. Outdoor air can be dehydrating due to solar radiation, low humidity, air pollution and wind. Indoor air can be dehydrating due to forced-air heating and cooling, and insulated walls and windows. You can raise indoor humidity with bowls of water, house plants and room humidifiers.

¨      Clothing. A white t-shirt has an SPF of about 10 (depending on the thickness of the material). This may be enough to prevent sunburn but may not block UV radiation. Heavier clothing and long sleeves are always recommended in the sun, as are hats and sunglasses.

¨      Sleep and stress. Adequate sleep, stress reduction and exercise can enhance every aspect of your health. The goal should be seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep per night.

Skin Health and…Acid?

Most of the human body is alkaline rather than acidic, and with good reason. Because most water on Earth is alkaline, that is the environment preferred by living organisms on our planet. Unfortunately for us larger organisms, alkalinity is also the preferred environment for most bacteria, both good bacteria and bad bacteria.

Chemists measure alkalinity and acidity on the “pH scale,” which goes from zero (most acidic) to fourteen (most alkaline). Seven, the halfway point, is neutral, neither acidic or alkaline. The easiest way to tell if a substance is acidic or alkaline is to stick a piece of litmus paper in it (the word “litmus” means “colored moss,” even though the active chemical originally came from lichen). Vinegar, which is acidic, will turn litmus paper purple while baking soda dissolved in water will turn it blue. If you don’t have litmus paper, a leaf from a purple cabbage, with the overlying waxy membrane scraped away, will also turn blue in an alkaline solution.

The acid mantle protection barrier

Because acidic pH levels, below seven, tend to retard bacterial growth, the parts of the human body most prone to bacterial invasion are slightly acidic in pH, rather than alkaline. This is true of saliva and of the skin’s surface. A healthy skin surface will have a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. The most acidic portion of your skin, one of the body’s primary defenses against bacterial invasion, is the called the “acid mantle protection barrier.” Since the acid mantle depends on skin moisture to maintain its pH, it is extremely important to your body’s bacterial defense that your skin contains adequate water.

“Good water” versus “Bad water”

Why is mineral content and pH important? Most people do not realize that absolutely pure water, containing ONLY hydrogen and oxygen, is NOT natural. This “distilled water” must be artificially manufactured. While distilled water has many important uses, it is essentially dead, has a neutral pH, and is not particularly good for you. It is the dissolved minerals, present in every natural water on Earth, which transform the sterile combination of hydrogen and oxygen into a living, life sustaining, bio-active organic compound.

The ideal skin water

Because most tap water is alkaline, it is not beneficial to the acid mantle and is not readily absorbed into skin. Although alkaline water can temporarily bloat and waterlog skin, it does not chemically unite with the acidic water bound up in the skin’s internal tissue in the dermis and epidermis. Instead, alkaline water simply evaporates back out within minutes, taking some of the skin’s internal, acidic, semi-bound moisture with it. When alkaline tap water dries on the skin, after a bath for example, it leaves a dehydrating residue that can actually pull water out of the skin. We towel off after a bath or shower because we instinctively know that tap water leaves an uncomfortable, dehydrating film.

Cosmetics, lotions and topical medications intended for application to the skin’s surface are required by United States law to be “pH-balanced,” which means they are required to have a pH similar to the skin’s pH. However, a dried film of alkaline residue between the lotion and your skin can adversely effect both the pH of the application and the pH of the skin’s acid mantle underneath.

Skin-compatible moisture

One way to moisturize skin is by drinking alkaline tap water and waiting for your body to convert it to acidic water and feed it to your skin from the inside out. Your skin obtains much of its water in this manner but the process takes hours and your body gives many other organs precedence over skin.

The fastest and most reliable way to add water to dehydrated skin and improve skin health and acid mantle functioning, is to mist your skin with water that has a skin-compatible pH.

Nature’s Mist® all-natural skin moisturizing water, from Bio-Logic Aqua Technologies Biomedical Research, is the only product meeting the dual requirements of skin-compatible pH (6.48) and fine mist application. In a clinical study where one side of the face of several test subjects was misted four times daily with Nature’s Mist® and the other side was misted with alkaline tap water in a Nature’s Mist® bottle, the skin’s basal moisture content, on average, increased after thirty days on the Nature’s Mist® side and actually decreased on the tap water side. Nature’s Mist® applied after bathing and before applying cosmetics, lotions or topical medications; neutralizes alkaline residue,”fixes” the skin’s pH to enhance skin beauty and health, improves faded cosmetic color, and aids absorption of topical medications).

Daily skin care

If Nature’s Mist® is unavailable (it can be ordered here), be sure to drink plenty of water, take long steamy baths or showers, shower quickly after your bath, dry your skin thoroughly after bathing or washing (pat, don’t rub), and apply a skin lotion immediately after bathing. See “Tip of the Month” for a morning skin cleansing program.

In Nature’s Mist®, skin moisturizing water, Sharon Kleyne has discovered a “pure”, mild, natural, pH-correct water that does not leave a dehydrating residue on skin. Her research has documented that this unique water, bottled as it emerges from a natural spring in Oregon, is the ideal natural moisturizer for the human skin.

Correct Application of Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®

Obtaining Maximum Benefit for Dry Eye Symptoms

Recent discoveries by Bio-Logic Aqua Research have resulted in Nature’s Tears EyeMist, the first all-natural, pH balanced water mist product to soothe dry eye symptoms. Correctly application of the eye mist is important for maximum benefit.

Benefits of eye misting.

  • Instantly soothes dry irritated eyes.
  • Convenient and easy to apply (even if your hand is unsteady).
  • No touching of eyelids, tilting back of the head or aiming the dropper.
  • Supplies only the amount of water needed by the eyes.
  • Does not flood tear film or interfere with the natural tear film structure.
  • Moisturizes contact lenses without removing lenses.
  • Soothes computer eye strain (also called “Computer Vision Syndrome” or CVS).
  • No additives, chemicals, preservatives or propellants.
  • Will not “run” eye make-up.

Correct application.

The most common application error is attempting to apply the eye mist as though it was an eye drop, by aiming it directly into the eyes. This can flood the eyes and lessen some of the benefits. The objective of eye misting is to create a swirl of moisture around the face, like humid air, from which the eyes absorb as much water as they need. Brief blinking is OK.

  • With eyes open, point the nozzle of the eye mist canister towards the side of your face, next to the eyes (if you point the nozzle directly at the eyes, there could be a reflex to pull away and close the eyes).
  • Press the top of the canister to release the eye mist.
  • Move the eye mist canister across face, 8 to 12 inches from eyes, in a one-to-two-second sweep. Do not mist directly into eyes.

A Morning Routine for Beautiful Skin-Nature’s Mist

  1. To minimize exposure to alkaline tap water, daily facial cleansing should be done at the bathroom sink and not in the tub or shower. Ideally, the process should be unrushed and relaxing.
  2. Place a little mild liquid cleanser in the palm of your wet hand and apply sparingly over your facial skin. Do not rub in.
  3. Gently rinse the face five to ten times, with a washcloth compress, in very warm water. Leave skin wet
  4. after rinsing. Pat or press washcloth, do not scrub.
  5. Your skin is an early-warning of poor health, inadequate nutrition and excessive stress. Always watch for
  6. skin changes, which may indicate the need for a lifestyle change or a trip to the doctor.
  7. Finish with a moisture-sealer (lotion or make-up base), to hold in moisture in your skin. To avoid clogging pores, apply skin-care products by placing a small amount on your palm and gently tapping it into your skin with your fingertips. The best moisture-sealers will have a sunscreen SPF of 15 or greater to help prevent skin cancer from solar radiation.

  • If you don’t have time for repeated compresses: after the soap application and one or two rinses, soak a washcloth or hand towel with warm water and make a tent over your face. Leave it there for a minute or two, with eyes opened and breathing deeply. This will moisturize skin, eyes and breathing passages.
  • For best results, apply NATURE’S MIST® all-natural, pH-correct skin moisturizing water on face and body before cleansing, then again after cleansing but before applying the moisture-sealer. The pre-misting opens pores, softens and relaxes skin and helps toxins, dirt and bacteria come to the surface. Misting just prior to applying the moisture-sealer counteracts the negative effects of alkaline tap water.
